Whether you are a kid, teenager or full-fledged adult, you probably already know the sentence I am about to say and that sentence is: nothing lasts forever.

Nothing. Not fame, riches, clothes, watches, not even you. Everything seemingly has a time limit on it but that’s what makes it so special, you know?

That’s what makes you want to hold onto it as tight as you can and enjoy the moment while it’s right in front of you.

Already mentioning fame and riches on the list, we can add relationships on that list for Alex Kinsey and Sierra Keaton better known as American music duo Alex & Sierra from the years of 2013–2017.

From both attending University of Florida to winning Season 3 of X-Factor USA with mentor Simon Cowell, the future looked bright not only for the two newly mega-stars but to their fans but alas nothing of substance truly formed in their four year relationship.

Alex Kinsey

To more understand the rise and fall of the duo, let’s go into their origins starting with Alex Kinsey. Born September 8, 1991, Kinsey always had a knack for music living in New Smyrna Beach, Florida and would take up guitar in middle school.

After achieving success, he would cite fellow guitarist and musician, Jason Mraz, as one of his biggest influences and would even have a chance to work with him. How cool is that?

Sierra Deaton

Born February 11, 1991 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as the youngest of two girls, Deaton studied various dance including hip hop, ballet, jazz, tap and Irish dancing. She would even compete in Irish dancing for 11 years winning international titles on 3 separate occasions.

Romance Blooms

Both being born the same year, they met while attending their respected high schools studying and formed a friendship.

Their friendship would take them both to the University of Florida where they would remain friends until 2011 when they finally decided to start dating.

While dating both would go on to discover each other’s talent and love for music and would go on to form their duo titled “Alex & Sierra.”

They never really made it too high off the ground and wouldn’t receive the wandering eyes of any record labels but all that would change in 2013.

X-Factor USA Success

In hopes of achieving their dreams of entering the music industry, Kinsey and Deaton would take their talents to New Orleans, Louisiana auditioning for the judges of X-Factor USA blowing them away with their sultry-passionate version of “Toxic” by Brittney Spears.

Proving to be serious competition for all involved, they made it all the way to the Top 40 where their reward came in the form of English record executive, Simon Cowell, becoming their mentor for the rest of the show.

For their first performance, they did their version of “You’re The One I Want” from the 1978 cult musical Grease.

It was this performance, that might of spelled doom for the real life couple as Demi Lovato, one of the judges on the show, adore their act but questioned the durability of their relationship.

A bit yikes, am I right? Luckily, the couple decided not to cut things off there and went on to wow the judges and audience with more and more renditions of fan favorite songs such as:

  • “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift
  • “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke
  • “Say My Name” by Destiny Childs
  • “Say Something” by A Great Big World and Christine Aguilera
  • and many, many more……

But it was “All I Want For Christmas” by Mariah Carey that won the the duo the whole enchilada on the final season of hit-singing show.

In an interview after the episode aired, Simon Cowell would say the two received most of the public votes throughout the season and expected nothing but success from them.

Debut Album And Small Success

Shortly after celebrating their big win, Kinsey and Deaton announced that fans wouldn’t have to wait long for original music as they were working on an album and had quite the help in the form of record producers, Jason Mraz, Harry Styles and 9-time Grammy Award Winner John Legend.

To ease the musical appetite of their fans, they released their debut single “Scarecrow” as well as dropping the artwork for their album titled “All About Us.”

Their debut single would sell 30,000 copies in it’s first as well as dropping a puppet-form music video.

As the months went by the duo released four promotional singles for their album with their fourth and last one “Here We Go” gaining the #4 slot on iTunes Singles Chart.

Realizing the time had come on October 4, 2014 All About Us was released to the masses debuting at #8 on the Billboard 200 and selling 27,399 copies in it’s first week and selling 86,000 copies as of August 2016.

The Beginning of The End

Even though their album gained a high spot on the Billboard 200 and garnered mostly positive reviews from critics and fans alike, it appears that wasn’t enough to save the duo as the albums sales weren’t what Columbia Records were expecting as they were dropped out of the blue nine months later.

Deciding to take the good with the bad, Kinsey and Deaton would grind and announced to their fans on Twitter that they were making a comeback with an EP titled As Seen On TV that would feature covers of the songs that made them the winners of Season 3 X-Factor USA.

After a collab with British producer Gareth Emery for his album “100 Reasons To Live”, they announced the release date of their album being September 30, 2016.

This didn’t do them any favors as the highest it go on the charts is 183 and didn’t wave down the attentions of new fans or record labels. The duo released no more music after this.

Break Up

The date was September 1, 2017 when the duo revealed a secret they have been hiding from their fans.

They revealed a year prior that they had broke up and tried to continue a professional-working relationship but alas felt it was time to call it quits and focus on pursuing their solo careers.

And just like that, Alex & Sierra was no more and as of this article there isn’t a rumor or any piece of news that could make any of us believe that the dynamic duo will ever make a return.

Current Day

It is now 2022 and it seems that neither Kinsey or Deaton have been successful in gaining the same fame they had back in 2013. Despite that, they haven’t left the music industry and seemingly still giving it everything they got.

Kinsey currently makes music with his band, BoTalks, consisting of him and Swedish musician and songwriter Johan Linbrandt. He even dropped an EP titled Party of One on May 31, 2016.

Deaton has apparently found her niche in songwriting having co-written songs for 5 Seconds of Summer, Gnash and Lovelytheband and is currently signed to record label Kobalt Music Group as a songwriter.

She also released her debut single “Don’t Hurt” on February 16, 2018 under her new stage name: Essy.

Conclusions

To reiterate what I said earlier: nothing is forever. Including relationships, however please do not be afraid of this but find joy.

Find joy in those small moments of time that many of us take for granted. Find joy in knowing that you are fortunate enough to experience this thing called life and when it’s over find joy in the fact that you did the best you could do.

American philanthropist and socialite Rose Kennedy once went on record to say: “Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments.”
